Ashley Wetzel Korea's National Creation Myth - of Bears and Tigers

I recently came across this myth. It is said that Korea is the only country where the tiger is at the center of it's culture. Sadly, the Koreans lost their last tiger over 50 years ago. This was of interest to me, as I am a conservation student with focus in large cats. What I did not expect to see is the inclusion of the bear in this myth. This is why I'm sharing it with you. According to the myth, a tiger and a bear living in a cave prayed to the God of the Sky, Hwanin, to become human. Hwani… Continue

Ashley Wetzel Bear Bile Farming - A Day In The Life

After working on my last blog "Human Crimes Against Wildlife (Inhumanity)" (bigcatconservationstudent.blogspot.com) and doing research on Bear Bile Farming, I've decided that this form of animal overexploitation deserves a little more focus and it's own personal blog. I find this example of animal cruelty to be absolutely and horribly foul. In my ranking of the worse crimes against animals, it is among the tops. As a carnivorous mammal lover, I take this crime very, very seriously. The first t… Continue

Madeleine Truax Give a gift in exchange for a bear's smile

2009/08/18 Today I received my first plush moon bear. I couldn't wait to add him to the "cute" corner of my desk. Somehow, this little black bear, with that yellow crescent on his chest, seems to be smiling at me from where he's sitting, and magically, he becomes the source of my inspiration. People sometimes shy away when they hear about a cause, not that they don't care, but perhaps afraid of a commitment they do not know if they can continue to contribute to. Especially at times like these,… Continue

Madeleine Truax Moon Bears 月熊

2009/07/31 Moon bear. Such a beautiful name for a beautiful creature. The bright yellow crescent on the front of the chest. The gorgeous pitch black coat. But most of all, the most gentle, forgiving animal the world has ever seen, even after many years of abuse, when they were finally rescued and set free and offered a piece of fruit by a human - not too different in looks from the same human that had brutally abused them for years - they still reached out their palms and accepted the offer gra… Continue

Jeanette McDermott Once Upon a Moonbear

Check out my new Lens at Squidoo. The Lens features the children's book Ura's World, which was written by John Walker, who happens to be a keen fan of moonbears.org. Ura's World is beautifully crafted and bound, and tells a wonderful tale. The book is the perfect tool for teaching little people about moonbears and makes a gorgeous gift for any youngster. In my opinion, the book belongs in every classroom and library across the globe. Ura's World is published in Korean and En… Continue
