I've always wanted to see a bear build a nest in a treetop. It's very exciting to know that you experienced this rare opportunity in the wild.

Hi Jen,
Is good to know that you have a study plan figure out. Let me know how I can help. If you would like to get sample from BSBCC, you are most welcome.
Regarding funding, unfortunately there are no specific group that fund sun bear reserach, However, you can always try funding agencies that fund wildlife conservation or research work. Good luck. I know how challneging it is. Sun bear is still not a priority species for many conservation group. I hope wih all the hard works from everyone, we could change it.

Hi Wong,

I've finally worked out a project! I will be looking at fecal cortisol levels to monitor stress in captive sun bears that are housed in a variety of situations. My proposal will be finished by the end of the month so that I can apply for funding, but I'm having trouble finding any good grants to apply for. I've already missed the IBA grant's deadline of December 1st. Do you know of any other groups that fund sun bear research?
Thanks,

Jen

I was agitated all day yesterday by not having a camera while at the zoo. My camera finally broke down and bit the dust after two years of subjecting it to high humidity, salt spray and non-stop rain in the Central America rainforests and sea expeditions to and from the biological field station in the Osa Peninsula. I have to buy a new camera but won't have a chance to do that until this weekend. If time permits, I will return to the zoo before heading out for St. Louis on December 3rd. If I am able to visit again I'll definitely take the new camera and stay perched at the sun bear exhibit snapping away.

The San Diego Zoo is heavily focused on the sun bear through its Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species. The exhibit is nice but still leaves a lot to be desired from a bear's point of view. There is just so much room to roam inside a zoo exhibit. I know they certainly get bored hanging out in the same confined space day after day. No matter how large the zoo enclosure is, it's still small from a bear's perspective. But at least the bears are not poached for their paws, gall bladders and bile inside the zoo. It's a double-edged sword.

btw, the San Diego Zoo claims the sun bear is listed as endangered, but IUCN lists them as vulnerable. Is there another listing protocol other than IUCN that organizations use to cite their condition? I"m curious about the discrepancy in listing.

Hi Wong -
I went to the San DIego zoo today and watched for an hour two baby sun bear cubs playing together in a tree. They captivated me. So cute, so playful, fearless and reckless. I kept waiting for one of them to fall from the treetop and splatter onto the ground below. They are careless and careful at the same time. At one point Mama bear ran furiously up the tree to swat one of the cubs upside the head and then put its ear into her mouth and yanked the cub down the tree by its ear. He squirmed and fought but Mom won out. When she got to the base of the tree and dropped the cub, the little tyke scurried right back up the tree trunk onto a limb, and then peered down at Mom as if to say, "Ha! You can't make me come down from here until I'm good and ready!" I can see why you love those sun bears so much. They have personality plus!

These little sun bears really tug at your heart don't they? I've been reading your journal and blog and am always glad to read about your successes, and to learn about your needs. The sun bears are never far from my mind. Be sure and keep people at ecopaparazzi informed about your bear house construction. Post a blog about it, even if it just means copying and pasting from your journal. That's a fine thing to do. People will be interested.
