Bear exploitation at tourist trap in Tennessee

Sheri Reese has been conducting a citizen journalism investigation into a business that held bears captive for 18 years as a tourist draw to its general store in the high-tourism district of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, the place American singer/actress Dolly Parton helped make famous. Sheri has made visits to the store to photograph the bears and talk to the store owners about their practices and the way they treat the bears. Sheri says, "There is such sadness in their (the bears) eyes."…

Bearhugger Kitchen

This just in from Matt Hunt, with Free the Bears ...

We’re currently putting the finishing touches to our new Bearhuggers Kitchen in Cambodia. This is a much bigger facility to cope with the increasing number of bears that we have to feed each day (the current kitchen was designed when we only had around 30 bears, now it is 114!).

As soon as we have finished the…

8th grade music eco heroes

Maren posted this music video on one of our groups and when I saw it I just knew we had to help it go viral. These 8th graders have written a song and produced a music video that is perfect for raising awareness about the plight facing polar bears. It's wonderful! After watching it, please click on the facebook and twitter icons and tell others about it. Maybe it will inspire additional songs about other bear species.…

The Rights of All Species

Most legal systems promote the interest of the human community while giving no real protection to other species, or to the planet itself. They reflect and perpetuate a view of the Earth as simply a collection of 'resources' or objects which human beings are entitled to exploit for their exclusive benefit.

So what if there were another jurisprudence, based upon the concept that the planet and all species have rights? And they have those rights by virtue of their… Continue

Thank you Jeanette,  Angela was teaching English in Japan this year following her graduation from University.  She's only 20 years old and we lost all contact for a full day just after the quake so it was very stressful.  Good news is that after 4 flights and 24 hours in the air she is now home in Toronto and so happy to be here, although still worried about friends and her little students back in Japan.

One thing I have learned is that the Japanese people are an amazingly strong, united and resourceful culture.  They will persevere and overcome this tragedy with dignity, courage and cooperation.  They have my blessings and lasting admiration.

(They also happen to have an adorable set of twin Panda's located in the far southern region who are doing just great!  Happy news!)
