State of Affairs

Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) are sometimes called spectacled bears because of their markings. The species is suffering heavily and faces extinction from forest fragmentation through increased cattle grazing and maize and palm oil production, oil exploration, mining and "nuisance" killings when these gentle bears wander from fragmented forests into human settlements and crop fields looking for food and mates. Andean bears are found only in isolated pockets of South America.

Andean Bear Conservation Project in Ecuador aims to save the Andean Bear from extinction through in-field scientific studies and through the rehabilitation and release of captive bears.

Club Amigos del Oso Frontino is a children's education program of Fundacion AndigenA, an Andean bear conservation organization in Venezuela.

Thanks Andres, and congratulations on completing your Postgraduate work!  I will check on the ABF Site for information on your presentation in Loja as I would like to post that on LinkedIn.  I see this as a very significant event in the effort to preserve the Andean Bear and hopefully their habitat also.

I've seen some of the terrific photo's you took of Bubu - good work!  I sure hope that lovely bear gets back into the wild again soon or he will be too spoiled to ever want to leave!  : )~

Good luck with your Workshops this month!  You have all worked so hard and accomplished so much so fast it is difficult to keep up with you!  Keep up the great work!

I thought you all might enjoy this retail site.  This is the Andean bear design, but there are more than 100 animal designs from which to choose.  The cartoons are drawn by Courtney Janney, a keeper here at National Zoo (and she takes requests).  Enjoy!

Congratulations on another successful Workshop Andres!  Once again it looks like the children had a wonderful time learning about the Andean Bears.  It's great that you had the opportunity to speak with the adults about ideas to prevent bear attacks on livestock!  I hope they were responsive to your excellent suggestions.  I think you have already made quite a bit of progress in changing attitudes towards the bears!

Time to start preparing for the next Workshop!  I'm going to check out that photo album on Facebook now and start thinking of  more fund-raising ideas!
